Titles and Times

Title Plan:
  • Beauty is Pain
  • Pain is Beauty
  • What would you change?
  • What is your idea of beauty?
  • Is Beauty Worth Pain?- We decided on 'Is Beauty worth pain?' as we can tackle it from both areas giving it a balanced argument.
What Audience are we going to aim it at?

We decided that women are more in to beauty than men.
So we would aim it on women and teenagers, we decided
on teenagers as 16 year olds are becoming more body conscious
and older people are thinking more into plastic surgery.
Is this all down to the medias influences?

What Channel would we show our documentary on?

We agreed that we would show our documentary on
channel BBC3.This is because it is a well known channel
for documentaries to be shown on. They show allot of documentaries
and programmes on beauty for example 'Snog, Marry, Avoid.' At the
moment they are also showing a series of documentaries about
teenagers with extraordinary lives. We also chose BBC as it is an
unbiased channel which is what our documentary will be.

What Time would we show our documentary at?

We decided that we would play our documentary on a week night,
at around 9.00pm. This is because we don't want younger
children to view our documentary as it may not be appropriate
for there eyes. As our audience aim is 16-45 we thought that this
was quite a popular time for them to be watching television.

We would interview a range of teenagers, from 13 to 19 and hand out 20 questionnaires on whether they have taken part in any of the three behaviours before. It could include questions like; why? how do you buy them? Can you afford too? Do you enjoy it? Was it from bad influences? Have you considered the risks?

Interviews of Questionnaires.

Devil made me do it.

Themes
  • Crime and Punishment
  • Religion
  • Violence
  • Media
  • Role models
  • Youth
  • Muisc- the influence
  • Behaviour
  • Good vs Evil

Narrative structure.
Marylin Manson was blamedfor the influence of the teenagers. It follows a time line and the events. Within this documentary it goes back in time towards the end so this would be circular. The narrative is epic this means it will jump from place to place. It then goes on to all three girls planning the murder and then confessing what they have done, it shows this on real footage recorder. Within this documentary it tells the audience more of why it happened than it did of what actually happened. There is also a mixture of voiceovers narrating it, as it alo shows real footage recording of all the girls speaking.

Camera Work.
There aere establishing shots of the crowds jumping around and screaming fans - this shows how many teenagers Marylin could be influencing. An image of a church pops on to the screen then shows an establishing shot of a real church and also shows the audience jesus on a cross. There is also a close up shot of the hills which shows there is evidence of greenary showing the situation. Some of it is Hand-Held camera work. Within the Camera work there are alot of interviews which then bring in headshots and close ups, there are also large angle shots to show the scene. There is a low angle camera shot of Marylin Manson trying to show the audience the influence he has on people making him look bigger and better, also showing that a lot of people look up to him. There is real CCTV footage used which links into the investigation. It uses rule of thirds when interviewing Marylin Manson.

Mise-En-Scene.
All the fans are wearing dark clothes and a lot of dark make up this could show there emotions on the taste of there music. Paraphinalia -> bible, cross, things that people sociate with. There are smokey areas and flashy lights which show the emotions of their feelings - they obviously dont feel good and have a lot of bad thoughts going on in there heads.
Black = Death. Establishing shots of religious buildings which shows the audiences symbolic symmatary. Rock and roll music shows aggression they have. Marylin Mandon is a kinf of rebelious person as when hes walking down the streets of Italy he stands out because he is unique and his dress sense is quite dark, this is most probably why the blame was put on him. There are props used within the last scene when the murder takes place, it uses stuff like for example.. Crosses and jesus's statues, which links into the nun getting murdered and the theme of religion within The Devil Made Me Do It.

Sound.
Church bells going off which lets the audience know its religious. The sound of the fans screaming showing the excitment of marylin manson. Marylin manson singing his lyrics. Interviewing of the people, their voices in the background but not images. Within this documentary sound is used instead of pictures which accounts towards the murder. There are sounds of knives and rocks which link in as it was the weapons the girls used to kill the nun. Through the whole documentary there is a narrators voice in the background making sure that the audience understand everything which is going on, telling them parts which images wont do.

Editing.
White writing on a black screen - white on black. There are many cut away shots which shows images which will then quickly cut to another image. There is a fast pace of editing during the scenes of the Marylin Manson at his concerts with all the screaming audiences, as then there are slow editing during the emotive scenes. There are concert footages which shows the archive material used within the documentary. There are other editing techniques which include shot reverse shots, match on action and also eye line shots which looks like you are the nun running away.

Graphics.
In the documentary there are not many graphics apart from the titles, places and dates. The font that is used is a type of religious font which links into one of the themes in the document.

Documentory on Crystal meth.

Themes.
  • Crystal Meth - The drug that the documentary is all about, showing the affects of it and the crime it can cause.
  • Drugs - Lets the audience know how people made meth and how the whole meth became out of control, and also lets the audience know how many people were doing it.
  • Addicts - lets the audience know that when they had done it they were then addicted and couldnt stop making them more vulnerable and iller.
  • Law - It was illegal to do crystal meth but people still did it.
  • Drug smuggling - shows footage of how people smuggle it.
  • Peer pressure - Many people had been influenced by it so they also did it which led to more and more people wanting to try it out.

Narrative Structure
Follows different events which are taking place for example a home which has exploded due to crystal meth setting fire to the house, and another example is someone trying to smuggle in drugs. Meth destroying the community. Within this documentary it shows the life of people have been on drugs and what the effects are from doing them. It also shows explosions from what it can do. Images pop up showing what its done to people from before to after of them looking ill with bad splodges on their faces. The documentary follows a linear narrative, the storyline always follows the fact that its about Meth, and also Meth addiction. The narrative structure of this documentary is linear, this means that it shows it all in order from the start to finish.

Camerwork.
Esatblishing shot of a drug home (people making meth inside)
Close up shot of police badge showing that they have the power and that its agaisnt the law to do meth.
Rule of thirds when someone is being interviewed. (Medium shots).
Image of a lady whos taken crystal meth which leads to her having red dots all over her face showing the affects. Also show an image of someones eyes close up where they are red.
They use real footage within this documentary to show the real atmosphere of what it would of been like.
Crime scene where meth was being made, looking a mess.
They also use nightvision on camera to make things more clearer for the audience and them to see.
Raided house footage, camera is handeld.
Pan shot inside a house where crystal meth had been taken, house was a mess, rubbish everywhere.
There is an extreme close up shot of pills being put in a hanbag.

Mise-En-Scene.
Shows crimes scenes and the events taking place, people who are taking the drugs wearing shabby clothes and dont look well in the face. Lights are flashing from police cars. Physical appearance changes after the people have took the drugs.. showing them before theyve had crystal meth and after they have had it. Columbia gave up the meth completely. Shows images of the different medicines. There are a few interviews  within the documentary showing what its actually like and the effects crystal meth have. Shows real footage of the peoples houses who have consumed the drug or sold the drug. Within this documentary they use images with families torn apart making the audience know it can lead to that showing the emotion it has on other families. There are props used such as pill bottles linking to the fact that they are doing crystal meth.

Sound.
The music is up beat in the documentary showing the effects and emotions. Police sirens going off which could tell the audience that police will always find out. When being interviewed slow music runs through the background showing the emotion and the effect its had on the people whos taken crystal meth. Tells a story of a young 9 year old girl being taken to foster as parents were on the drugs. The sound that is used links in with the images and they both run smoothly at the same time. Music comes on quietly when you see images of the people who have took the drug. There is a Narrator in the background making sure the audience understand the whole documentary, the narrator helps for example they use statstics.

Graphics/Editing.
Fast motion - this could show the audience what the drug can do to you in some kind of sense.
Words appear on the screen. Titles/Frontlines - white on black screen/ black on white screen.
Different kind of cut away images being put up on the screen then showing a different image.
One of the main graphics they use is the barcharts to show the audience when most people hae done it and when its calmed down. There are fading pictures which represent the girl not being able to go back and change time from when she was taking crystal meth she has already messed up and it cant be fixed that it why the images fade out slowly. In the corner of the screen it says 'frontline,' this is the logo for who produced the documentary. There are barcharts used withinn the documentay.

This image was released as an advert, to promote people understanding what crystal meth can do and the effects of it. By the title being 'Youll never worry about your lipstick on your teeth again' is being sarcastic, as by your teeth will be to rotten and your lips will have scabs all over them, This is a great adevertisment to release showing the effects as people would be put off it straight away in some cases.
